Why Do I Need to Supplement?

Good nutrition used to be simple: follow the colorful food pyramid and you were golden!  However, due to changes in the way we grow crops, the foods we eat today are seriously deprived of basic nutrients.  Even our fruits and vegetables don't pack the same "punch" they used to.  This is due to our modern day diet which consists mostly of processed foods.  The grocery stores buy them because the food can last longer on the shelves without spoiling.  YOU buy them because they are cheap and easy to cook up.  I just went to my pantry and noticed my can of black beans doesn't expire...until June 2013!  How is that possible?  One word: preservatives.  Think of it like mummification of your food.  Preservatives are used to stop food from breaking down and spoiling so quickly.  Good for the grocery store who is trying to capitalize on their profit, bad for your stomach that is trying to figure out how to break it down!

The need becomes increasingly apparent that we must ADD to our current diet to ensure the we get the proper vitamins and minerals to prevent diseases and maintain health!  I believe that every health issue I listed in the first paragraph can be avoided by meeting your daily need of good nutrition.  Adding to our diet, or supplementing, does not have to be complicated, but I do encourage you as the consumer to research what supplements you are taking!  Be a supplement snob!  Be picky about what you are investing in.  Look for these key qualities:
* Supplements have been clinically tested for purity and potency.* Supplements have been proven effective and safe.* Ingredients are combined for maximum absorption.

What Can Reliv Do?

Hi - here are a handful of ratings of Reliv (and a few other soy supplements). While Reliv could be a terrific product (I haven't tried it) - in my mind all supplements sold through multi-level marketing programs need to be examined with extra scrutiny because of the tarnished reputation of the entire MLM world. Unfortunately, there has always been a tendency in the MLM world to make extravagant claims of efficacy - which are almost never supported by independent, placebo controlled clinical studies. This has resulted in many MLM marketers being warned or fined by the FDA, including Reliv International. I happen to take a couple of supplements which are only sold via MLM, and I think they are outstanding. But beware of the "cure-all" claims - they are an unfortunate byproduct of MLM's unique brand of capitalism.

Reliv is a great product!  I take it every day and it has helped me with so many different issues that all stemmed from mono.  Migraines, extreme fatigue, muscle and bone aches, anemia and hypoglycemia  I started sleeping better and got so much more stamina.  .  The reason it works so well is because it is in a completely balanced form designed for the human body.  It is a food product and patented .  It doesn't mess with any medications and is completely safe.  Reliv does not make any claims to cure anything.  It was designed to let the human body work the way it is supposed to given the right "fuel".  I know that the reason it is sold thru independent distributors is because the leaders of the company wanted to make sure that people knew exactly what they had a hold of, understand the product, and so their customers get the best results possible with one on one attention. =-)  I strongly recommend giving the product a good try. I am about ready to start a new canister for my seven year-old son in the vanilla flavor of Reliv Now for Kids! nutritional supplement. Just one month ago I took the plunge and purchased a container from a seller on ebay for $12.00. My son only drinks soymilk in either regular or vanilla, so I have been adding a few spoonfuls to the refrigerated soymilk container each morning.

Reliv Now for Kids! is to be served with either milk or water. The canister comes with a scoop, but that does not fit into the soymilk opening so I have been utilizing plastic spoons with the equivalent close to a scoop measurement. “ Ideal for consumption at the start of the day.” Not a meal replacement.

I first heard of Reliv Now for Kids! through an autism listserve where a parent was giving feedback that their child had been vocalizing more since starting this supplement. Since my son is non-verbal that was the boost I needed to give this a try, which led me to my initial purchase. Reliv products are available through distributors with details at the website. Since I buy and sell on ebay I decided to try that resource and succeeded with great results thus far. The expiration date is stamped at the bottom of the container, September of 2005.

There is no can opener needed to get the container open. The clear plastic lid conceals the tin foiled cover that has a pull tab to remove with ease. The net weight for the canister is 13.3 ounces. The Reliv Now for Kids! is available in chocolate or vanilla flavor. The servings per container come to fourteen if you follow with one scoop per serving. There are 100 calories, 20 from fat, 11 grams of sugar, 0 cholesterol, 3 grams of protein, 17 grams total carbs, 90 mg of sodium and potassium. I checked online and this is the same for Chocolate as well as the Vanilla I have purchased.

The ingredients include Omega 3 fatty acids, grape seed extract, non dairy creamer, hydronated canola oil, natural and artificial flavors, ascorbic acid, fructose, potassium caseinate, sodium chloride, PABA, FOS, soy extract, Xanthan gum, Guar gum, copper gluconate and folic acid. Reliv Now for kids! has 200% of Vitamins C and E. Vitamins A, D and F are 50% along with Calcium, folic acid, Vitamins B-1, B-6 and B-12.

The smell is very pleasing with the shade of the powder an off-white/cream colored. This is similar to what cake mixes look like and tastes just as good! This blends nicely with the soymilk and I may try this with my almost nine-year old and water or skim milk. Reliv Now for Kids! is “fortified with cell-protecting antioxidants and soy protein to provide sustained energy and help build healthy bodies”.

Initially I was under the impression that Reliv Now for Kids! was a gluten casein free item that would be suitable for children on a gfcf diet. It was not until my son had consumed most of the first container that I realized the potassium caseinate was listed as an ingredient. For those that may not know, potassium caseinate is “ spray dried low flavor milk protein manufactured from fresh skim milk and can be used in a variety of food and pharmaceutical products, especially where low sodium levels are required.”

My son is not on the diet since he does consume milk products like pudding and cheese related snacks, so this was not a reason to cease using Reliv Now for Kids! I have noticed over the past month more vocalization from my son. During his feeding therapy he clearly said NO several times when prompted to consume more of a product. His performance level at school has increased as well as his enthusiasm for getting to school each morning. This can be contributed to the boost of energy from drinking his soymilk with Reliv Now for Kids!

Relìv International Reports First-Quarter 2010 Results

 A nutrition and direct selling company, today reported that sales and earnings in the first-quarter of 2010 were below last year's first-quarter results, but sales outside of the United States rose during the period.

Net sales were $22.7 million, a decline of 4.5 percent from the first quarter of 2009. U.S. sales declined 9.0 percent. International sales rose 36.1 percent, with approximately half of the increase due to currency fluctuations.

Net income was $746,000 for the quarter, or $0.06 per diluted share, compared to $1.0 million in net income, or $0.07 per diluted share, in the same quarter last year.

Robert L. Montgomery, chairman, president and chief executive officer, said, "International sales were a bright spot this quarter, increasing approximately 19 percent excluding the effect of currency fluctuations. Our U.S. distributors and customers, however, are still feeling the effects of the recession, as their spending remains below last year's levels. The rate of the sales decline, however, has moderated compared to previous years' declines."

Montgomery described several tactics designed to increase sales. "We are currently conducting the Relìv 'Freedom Tour' in which senior executives will visit our 35 top U.S. markets. We hope to spur new-distributor enrollments and encourage existing distributors to expand their businesses more quickly," Montgomery said.

"In the first quarter, we launched the Team Relìv concept in which distributors will sponsor running events in their hometowns," he said. "The events give participants an opportunity to sample Innergize, our isotonic sports product, and give our distributors a means of generating leads. This is part of a strategy to attract younger distributors to Relìv and to increase our brand awareness by emphasizing the role of Relìv supplements in a healthy, active lifestyle," Montgomery said.

Relìv also introduced three new Relìvables products during the first quarter, including Relìvables Soy Nuts, Relìvables snack bars and "r" body lotion.

One factor in the overall sales decline has been a reduction in the size of the average order. "Over the last two years, the number of orders has remained relatively steady, which indicates a solid customer base," Montgomery said. "We believe the recession, therefore, is the main culprit leading to lower average order sizes."

He added, "Our total distributor count declined from last year, mainly due to a slow January and February this year. In the first quarter of last year, enrollments were very strong due in part to a special promotion that wasn't in place in the first quarter of 2010. March 2010 enrollments, however, were back to our historical levels," he said.

Relìv generated net cash from operating activities of $1.6 million in the first quarter, less than the $2.8 million in net cash generated in the first quarter of 2009. As of March 31, 2010, Relìv had cash and cash equivalents of $7.2 million, up slightly from $7.0 million on hand as of the same date in 2009.
